"Don't quit your day job." How many times have you heard that said to people with a passion for an idea like this. Trust me, I'm not expecting to retire in the Swiss Alps on this, but if you like what you see...
"Do something about it!" Buy an enlargement of one of my photos. Buy usage rights for whatever your needs may be -- print, web, graphic design ... you name it. email me I'm going to be pointing you to books and merchandise that are directly connected to my passion. Namely: The art of seeing the world close up. What I'm going for here is a unique point of view. You won't see macro for macro sake. I find many close up photographs boring for their obsession with the technology and lack of compelling design. I'm also interested in manipulated photographs (stay tuned) which are an endless source of inspiration for me thanks to the miracles of Photoshop. The plan is also to be highly selective about everything I showcase here, with the focus limited to bandwidth-hogging giant imagery that explodes in your face with unexpected beauty.
With page after page of photographs that make me say "Whew, I could learn a lot from this guy" if you like what you see here, by all means buy this book. Multiple 5-star ratings on Amazon and beyond the extraordinary technical competance is a surprisingly delicate compositional aesthetic. Now that I've got the big words out of my system what knocks me out about this book is how approachable it is from a writing standpoint. And how full it seems to be with common sense. Rather than go through the subject matter blow by blow...take a read of the back cover image below and revel in some of the images you'll find inside.
Hint:
I've violated web101 on purpose with these images, and most of them on this
site, so if you do a "save image" with your browser, you can see
them... |

By the way, none of these images would have been possible without the help of my trusty Canon G2 which has a most excellent macro mode and my Gitzo tripod. You'll see images courtesy of Nikon and Canon 35mm on this website thanks to my film scanner, and probably there'll be an occasional "objet d" from my flatbed.
I really love the G2 if you're thinking about a digital camera and dig the extremeness of large digital images by the way. Probably the best feature is the way the screen swivels which is really useful for close up shots and it has a macro mode that I put to use, in fact, in the home page shot of the red amaryllis. I find myself eagerly attempting fresh angles on everything from mundane to intricate. The Canon G3 is its successor with some but not all of the same feature set. Check them out. The G2 is still for sale and it offers the same 4megapixel resolution that the G3 does. One feature that is a dramatic improvement is that the G3 can do a better job of subbing for a video camera. It can take a 3 minute movie as compared to the G2's 30 second limit. Of course, the pixel wars make me crazy. Now there's the s50 (a 5 megapixel Canon) that would be a better fit in my pocket. But I'd miss the swivel screen and the breadth of attachments for the G series even though all three of these cameras are anything but svelte. Meanwhile, you won't see me abandoning film because digital still has a way to go to catch film's resolution. And I'm a big fan of resolution as you might imagine. BUT, I was talking to my friend Andrea and pointing out that the best camera is the one you take with so click here to see what she's thinking of getting. I'll bug her for a field test and review in a few weeks.
As I mentioned already, all my images in this site are "available." That means I'll make you a poster print (22"x28") for about $50 not including mounting and framing. I'll be working with the good people at Formato (www.formatosite.com) to produce what tickles your fancy. And, of course, I'm happy to talk to you about licensing for commercial purposes. Figure on prices similar to Corbis (www.corbis.com) for similar usages. Also, I'm pleased to say that I'm a barewalls.com affililiate. Until they start offering my work in their catalog, you'll have to come to me. Meanwhile they've got some most excellent stuff that you can get framed for surprisingly affordable prices.
